Free insurance calculators and honest guides for auto, home, renters, landlord, and motorcycle insurance. We explain what you actually need — not what generates the highest commission.
Most people are either over-insured (paying for coverage they don't need) or dangerously under-insured. Answer these questions for a personalized recommendation.
Average annual premiums vary dramatically by state — from under $1,000 in Maine and New Hampshire to over $3,500 in Florida and Louisiana. Select your state and driver profile to see estimated rates.

Comp and collision coverage make sense when your car is new or valuable. On older vehicles, the annual premium may approach or exceed the maximum claim payout — making the coverage a poor financial value.
Check every discount you qualify for. Most drivers qualify for 4–8 discounts they're not currently receiving. Estimated savings shown per discount — actual amounts vary by insurer.
Our calculators give you estimates — but your actual rate requires a real quote. These are the most trusted comparison tools and direct insurers. We don't sell your information.
Compare quotes from at least 3 providers. Rates can vary by hundreds of dollars for identical coverage. Always verify coverage details before switching — don't let a lower premium cause a lapse in coverage.
Your coverage should equal the cost to rebuild your home — not its market value. Rebuild costs are typically $150–$400/sq ft depending on location and construction quality.
Average annual premiums for $300,000 dwelling coverage. Rates vary significantly based on catastrophe risk — Florida, Louisiana, and Oklahoma are consistently highest due to hurricane and tornado exposure.
Check every discount you may qualify for. Bundling home with auto is typically the largest single discount available.
Most renters dramatically underestimate what their belongings are worth. Go room by room to find the right coverage amount — and avoid being underinsured after a loss.
Personal belongings (theft, fire, water damage), liability if a guest is injured in your unit, additional living expenses if your unit is uninhabitable, belongings stolen from your car.
Flooding (requires separate flood policy), earthquakes (separate policy), roommate's belongings, damage you cause to the building, your car (covered by auto insurance).
Actual Cash Value (ACV) pays the depreciated value of your belongings. Replacement Cost Value (RCV) pays what it costs to replace them new. RCV costs slightly more but is almost always worth it — a 5-year-old laptop has very little ACV but costs $1,200+ to replace.
Jewelry, fine art, musical instruments, and collectibles often have sub-limits (typically $1,500–$2,500 for jewelry). If you own expensive items, add a scheduled personal property endorsement for full replacement coverage.
Average monthly and annual rates for $30,000 personal property coverage with $100,000 liability. Renters insurance is one of the most affordable insurance products — most policies cost $15–$30/month.
Landlord insurance comes in three tiers. Most experienced landlords choose DP3 — but understanding the difference helps you make the right call for your property.
| Policy type | Coverage | Perils covered | Payout basis | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DP1 — Basic Form | Minimal | Named perils only (fire, lightning, windstorm, hail) | Actual cash value (depreciated) | Low-value properties, tight budgets |
| DP2 — Broad Form | Moderate | More named perils + water damage, falling objects | Replacement cost | Mid-range rental properties |
| DP3 — Special Form | Comprehensive | All perils EXCEPT those specifically excluded | Replacement cost | Most rental properties — recommended |
Providers like Proper Insurance and Steadily write policies specifically for short-term rental properties. These cover commercial rental activity, guest injuries, property damage, and loss of rental income. Typically costs $1,500–$3,500/year for a single property. This is the gold standard for hosts managing STRs as a business.
Some insurers offer a DP3 landlord policy with a short-term rental endorsement. Coverage may be more limited than a dedicated STR policy but costs less. Ask specifically whether the endorsement covers guest bodily injury and commercial rental activity — not all do.
For hosts who occasionally rent their primary residence (fewer than 60 days/year in some cases), a home-sharing endorsement on your existing homeowner's policy may suffice. State Farm and Farmers offer this. However, this is NOT appropriate for dedicated STR investment properties — only for primary residences rented occasionally.
Airbnb's AirCover provides $3M damage protection and $1M liability — but it's secondary coverage (your own policy must deny the claim first), has significant exclusions, requires documentation that can be disputed, and provides no loss of rental income coverage. VRBO's host protection insurance has similar limitations. Platform coverage should be a supplement to proper insurance, never a replacement for it.
Motorcycle coverage needs differ significantly from auto insurance. Bike type, riding experience, and how you use the bike all impact both your coverage needs and your rate.
Motorcycle rates vary significantly by bike type — a 600cc sport bike can cost 2–3× more than a cruiser of similar value due to higher accident statistics. State and rider profile also matter significantly.
If you store your motorcycle seasonally, you may be able to suspend collision and liability coverage during storage and keep only comprehensive (for fire, theft, and weather damage). This can save significantly over a full year of coverage.
The MSF safety course is the most impactful single discount — typically 5–15% and often available regardless of riding experience. Check every box that applies.
Motorcycle insurance is more specialized than auto. Not all carriers write motorcycle policies, and rates vary more dramatically between providers. Always compare at least 3 quotes.
